Billy Ocean, Watford Colosseum

2nd March 2009, 2:56pm

WeLoveWatford.co.uk sent a slightly reluctant Helen Ioannou along to Watford's Colosseum on Saturday night to see Billy Ocean, but eventually she was glad she made the trip....

Having ventured out on a miserable Saturday evening, already having been happily ensconced in front of the box, I probably wasn’t in the best frame of mind to be enjoying an evening with seventies icon Billy Ocean. But was I glad that I did...

The singer was on top form, opening his set with Love Really Hurts Without You and packing it full of classics like Red Lights Spells Danger and When the Going Gets Tough.

The Colosseum enjoyed a very lively and enjoyable evening with the soon-to-be pensioner, Ocean (aged 59), who roused his audience to sing along with him.

And what a performer! He was on for almost two hours, which was a great effort and not bad energy levels for a man fast-approaching 60-years-old. Ocean clearly still enjoys what he does, and on Saturday night the Colosseum did too.

Often the support band aren’t worth turning up for, but seen as I was reviewing the night for WeLoveWatford.co.uk, I thought I should make an effort to get there on time, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The band was led by Rozalla Miller, famous for Everybody’s Free (to feel good), who was happily showing off a very strong voice.

The only thing I will say that was a teensy bit negative was that the sound could have been better. The speakers seemed to be a bit muffled or too loud so it seemed to lose the quality of the sound (either that, or I’m getting on a bit, not sure which).

On the whole, the evening was great. Billy bashed out all his old hits (forgetting Caribbean Queen but never mind)!

He did play some new stuff too which was surprisingly good. In fact, I think I will go out buy his new album - no kidding - go Billy!

Maybe if you'd stayed for the encore then you would have heard "Caribbean Queen"?

So many people dont stay for the encore - they seem keen to get out to avoid the rush - and they usually miss one or even two more numbers.
I saw Tina Turna recently and loads of people got up and left before the end - mad fools- she was great
