Hair

Where: West End
When: April 2010
Seats: Free to enter http://www.welovewatford.co.uk/competitions/

Following a successful spell on Broadway, Hair is coming to the West End, and you lucky readers can win a pair of tickets to see the rock musical in April. Currently wowing audiences and critics alike on Broadway, Hair features some of the greatest songs ever written for the stage, including Let The Sun Shine InI Got Life and opening song Aquarius

Farmer’s Market

Where: Rose and Crown, Rickmansworth
When: Saturday 9am to 12pm
Seats: Free entry

Now in its fourth year, the Rose and Crown on Harefield Road in Rickmansworth is throwing its doors open to its well-established farmer’s market on Saturday morning. Despite the usual incentives to get down to a farmer’s market (locally produced meat, cheese, dairy…etc) this Saturday there’s something to occupy the kids as well, because the pub will help any kids that turn up make a Mother’s Day card for the following day. Usually between eight and 14 stalls at the market, so plenty of choice, and the added bonus of breakfast being served.

Moon

Where: Clarendon Muse, Watford
When: Saturday 7.30pm
Seats: £4.50 to £6

The thirst for small theatre-based cinemas in Watford is clearly yet to quenched, and while people keep coming through the doors, there’s no reason why places like the Pump House Theatre, Watersmeet, and Clarendon Muse shouldn’t sock it to the overpriced and often poorly attended cinema villages that have been poisoning independent film houses across the UK for the past decade or so. Bring back the west Watford ‘flea pit’, where punters queued around the corner of the building on a Saturday afternoon for a glimpse of the big screen - all is forgiven. On Saturday the Watford Film Society will show the though-provoking BAFTA-winning Moon at Rickmansworth Road’s Clarendon Muse. Tickets are
£4.50 in advance online or £6 on door. You can even bring your own alcohol…pic courtesy of mediaatmidnight.

Special menu

Where: Il Carnevale, St Albans Rd
When: Mother’s Day
Seats: £25.90 per person

Considering the amount of foliage that drapes from the walls of Il Carnevale,
David Bellamy is a more likely candidate to take your order than the restaurant owner, Luigi. And if you’ve met Luigi, you’ll know about it, he is an insatiable and unstoppable force, capable of bringing a smile (even if it is feigned) to anyone taking a seat at Il Carnevale. But his character isn’t there to replace quality food, the food can speak for itself, in fact WeLoveWatford.co.uk gave the restaurant a rave review on last visit. This Sunday is a Mother’s Day special, featuring dishes like stuffed mushrooms, agnello romano, lamb steak with wine, onions, mushrooms and sauce
funghi ripieni and homemade ravioli for a set price. Book ahead for this one (01923 247750), it’s a good restaurant and lots of people know it.

Sunday lunch

Where: Bar Bodega, Watford
When: Sunday 12pm to 5pm
Seats: £10 per person

Roasted top side of beef, rosemary lamb or pork loin, all served with roasted thyme potatoes, steamed carrots, broccoli and cauliflower creamed leeks, honey roasted parsnips and Yorkshire pudding with gravy, spells out a more traditional Sunday lunch for Mother’s Day. And it’s not just about the food, because Bar Bodgea’s relaxed, candle-lit, deep leather sofa atmosphere is a crowd-puller on a Sunday afternoon. Because of this it’s sought after, so book ahead (01923 229651).

Food tasting, carpet making

Where: Bushey and Oxhey Church
When: Tuesday 16 March 7.30pm
Seats: Free

As part of the aforementioned Mini Oxhey Arts Festival, Asia focussed charity, Ashram International, will be putting on an Afghan food tasting event towards the end of the festival. Visitors will not only be able to taste local Afghan food to get closer to the culture of the country, but will also get the chance to see another part of Afghan life in action as well at the event - carpet making. The display will be accompanied by an eye-opening short play specific to life in Afghanistan. Pic: Dariva.
